This short was created for Titmouse’s 5 second day show. Titmouse employees are paid one full day to create a film of their own choosing. I took the opportunity to create a “proof of concept” short that utilized animated eyes tracked onto the face of a puppet character. I’m currently working on a series pitch that uses this exact method for its characters, so now I have a something I can point to as an example.

Enjoy!

I animated on both Season 1 and Season 2 of Niko and the Sword of Light at Titmouse in addition to tackling animation retakes for both seasons.  Below are a few shots and sequences that I animated.

During my two years at Renegade Animation one of the stand out projects that I was part of was the Tom and Jerry Show.

I was primarily brought on to the Tom and Jerry production to oversee the transition to a new character design between seasons.  The series director, Darrell Van Citters, was not particularly fond of how the design of the first season hindered the animation quality, so he tasked me with reworking the character designs and Flash rigs to land on a style that would not only enhance the look of the final show, but also allow the animation to land closer to the pinnacle MGM years of Tom and Jerry shorts that everyone loves and remembers.  I did this by simplifying the rigs, adding a tapered ink line around the characters, and adding a bit more appeal to the characters faces.  Before animation production began, our small in-house crew created a library of stock animation that could be used in production that heavily referenced the classic cartoons.

I served as Animation Supervisor on several animated shorts for early children’s education company, ABC mouse, that were produced at Renegade Animation.  I was involved with many stages of production on these Flash animated shorts from storyboarding through to finished animation, as well as supervising the animation that was coming in from freelancers.  The ABCmouse shorts proved to be challenging because each short contained a full cast of characters that was unique to that piece – a challenge for Flash animation when quality expectations are high!

“The Shapes Song” Animation - I storyboarded, character rigged, and animated this short for ABCmouse.

“Phases of the Moon” Animatic  – This segment from an ABCmouse educational short was intended to explain how the moon is seen from earth in different phases throughout the month.  The concept seemed simple at first, but proved very challenging to accurately convey from a scientific standpoint.  I not only storyboarded this sequence, but also came up with the idea to teach this concept by using the “rotating chair in a planetarium” method.

Disney’s Where’s My Water presents Swampy’s Underground Adventures http://www.fusionbomb.com/swampys-underground-adventures/ http://www.fusionbomb.com/swampys-underground-adventures/#comments Thu, 15 Nov 2012 21:05:36 +0000 http://www.fusionbomb.com/?p=47

In 2012 Disney Interactive contracted Animax Entertainment to create twelve shorts starring the Swampy, Cranky, Allie, Karl, Pushy and Shovey, the gators of the popular Where’s My Water? mobile app.  I took a lot of pride directing these, constantly setting the bar high for our animators to rival television quality animation.  The efforts paid off.  Disney Channel decided to fit the two minute shorts into their regular programming day, Disney Stores nationwide held a “Swampy Day” previewing episodes in-store, and even on the jumbo screen of the flagship Times Square store.

Unlike most educational software on the market, my goal in directing the animation on Looney Tunes Phonics was to create animation at the exact same level of quality as the original Looney Tunes shorts.  For the software, we essentially created new Looney Tunes shorts using the exact style guides provided to us by Warner Bros. Consumer Products.  After creating full-turn Flash libraries for characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, Road Runner and Coyote we were able to freely animate the shorts with a small crew.  The potentials for patterning a similar production to this model are limitless, given the access to clean character art.

Below are the storyboards I created for the first episode of Looney Tunes Phonics, “24 Hour Daze”, an entirely new Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote short.

A wonderful experiment in creating an animated sketch comedy show steeped in topical humor that targeted celebrity. It may have been short lived, but the series did earn me an Annie Award nomination in the Individual Achievement category of directing an animated television production.

A trailer made for Animax’s original series pitch for which I created the storyboards and animatic.  Once the music starts the direction was entirely my creative vision.  I’m especially proud of the complex pans through the treehouse that I put in.

A brilliantly dark show to stretch my legs as a board artist.  Making Fiends may seem simple on the outside, but it was really well written and a fun challenge to push the acting of these characters.  I lucked out in getting assigned both Shorts episodes to board, which ranged from an abstract “Onions” commercial, to a dream about the land of cheese.

A pilot trailer for a series pitch created at Animax I storyboarded.  Yes, that’s Tom Kenny you’re hearing as Timmy, but also Dave Thomas as the little pug!

I’ve posted some recent storyboard tests here that I’ve completed for other studios as some alternative examples of my work.  All of them were done using Storyboard Pro and exported to a specific requested format.

Star Vs. The Forces of Evil

The instructions for this test was to write and board a sequence involving Star and Marco in her bedroom discovering the door is locked and what they do as a result.
